It is winter time now, and women around the world are doing what they can to protect their hair. I find that my hair thrives the best when it is being left alone. Typically throughout the winter, even when my hair was relaxed, I found different ways to protect it. One of the ways that I would protect my hair in the winter is that I would have my hair professionally braided. Now, I find that now in my natural state, I do not keep the styles in as long. With that being said, I no longer find it necessary to continue to spend an arm and a leg to to protect my hair...Especially when I can just do it myself.
The first time that I installed the XL box braids into my natural hair, is one of the most liberating things that I had done for myself. To know that I can have the luxury of doing such a wonderful. protective style, the way that I like it made me excited as you can imagine. You can have that luxury to!
Peep the video below in which I give a tutorial on how to install some gorgeous XL box braids right at home, for under $20!
Have you installed braids into your hair before?
If so, what style did you do?
What type of hair did you use? Synthetic or human?
So, as you can see, I had my XL Box braids similar Solange's hair style. I loved it so much because it is so easy to, really get in there an moisturize my scalp with. Now, this was not just an opportunity to really be able to moisturize my scalp but to also be able to give my hair as a whole more attention while it was parted. It was just a lot more easier to manage. Since the hair was already parted, it was a matter of applying the product, as where as where and how to apply the product. For example, I only applied the product for the most part, up to where my hair stopped. I didn't want to waste product on places that my hair was not. The products that I used go from Tresemme Naturals, S curl curl activator, to Doo gro growth oil, and Jojoba oil as well. If you want to see all of the products that I used as well as the technique that I used to achieve this look, take a look at the video ...
How do you moisturize your hair while it's braided? What techniques do you use to moisturize it? xoLJ
I feel soooo liberated! I did my own first set of Box braids! They took me forever, but it was so worth it. It took me 7 hours to do them , but that was because it was my first time, and there was a lot of putting in, then taking out, then putting them back in. I wanted them to still look somewhat professional, so I made sure to spend as much time as needed to get them the way that I wanted them. The best part about it, it only cost me $10 bucks for the hair!.
Here are some reasons why I chose to do them myself:
The cost was significally cheaper
I would't want to keep them in too long
I was not in pain after I did them
I did them exactly how I wanted them done
I didn't pull on my hair, so there was no damage
Want to see how they turned out... take a looksie!
Finished all your cleaning? Got your Sunday dinner ready? Ok great, because now it's time to take care of our mane. Time to deep condition!
My main staples in my deep conditioning regimen are:
Jojoba oil
Honey
Tresemme Naturals
Shea butter oil
bonnet dryer
deep conditioning plastic cap
This combination is enriched with oils that are essential for maximum moisture. The honey creates an extreme amount of softness, and makes it all the more easier for me to finger detangle my strands. Tresemme naturals applies the slick that I need to aid in detangling as well. See the video for detailed steps...
What products do you use for deep conditioning?
Do you have any favorites that just make you exhale?
Do you use hair tools such as combs, etc?
Just started you TWA? Wondering why you have no Curl pattern? Waiting for your luscious curl pattern to shine through?
I have some tips that have proven to help me to expose my TWA curls to shine through...
The #1 Key factor is moisture. Moisture, in every form (except frizz) is your best friend. Your hair needs to dissolve moisture from the inside out. What exactly do I mean by that...Intake of lots of water, and some odorless fish oil. Now, for the exterior aspect, Hair lotions. Just like our skin, we cannot just moisturize with oils, our pores will not dissolve it the way they should. In order for our skin to be moisturized properly, we need a lotion, or creme base formula that has a first main ingredient of Water. After applying a lotion of your choice, you may proceed to sealing you hair strands with an oil of your choice.
The next thing to be mindful of when trying to bring out your curl pattern is to avoid manipulation with hair tools, such as combs. I typically do not comb my hair and I detangle in the shower with my fingers. If you have an amazing conditioner, this should be easy. Check out the video for more details...
The hair products that I use are:
Carol's daughter healthy hair butter
Jojoba oil
Shea butter oil
Shea moisture products
Vitale Olive oil root therapy
What are your go to products for moisture, and how do you maintain your curlies?

Are there are any healthy hair care regimens that have optimized your hair health and growth?
Any tips that you have learned to promote healthy hair? Let me in on it..
First of all, "what is a TWA you say"? To be honest, I learned what this terminology meant only a few weeks ago. I never knew what it meant specifically, I just gathered after a while, that it had to do with shorter natural hair. Finally after seeing this term being used so much I wanted to really know what it meant. Here it is: T-Teenie, W-Weenie, A-Afro. Tweenie, weenie, Afro What does that mean to us natural chicas'? Tons of wash and go's, paired with a ton of Gel. What does that equal? In the winter time, it means a head cold. Do I want a head cold? Absolutely not!
With that being said, I decided to begin finding other ways to grow out my TWA the healthy way, without it breaking off in the cold, as well as me getting a head cold from trying to look decent. That's when I first considered wearing a Fedora as a great alternative. Fedora's are a great alternative in the Fall/ Winter months as they provide protection from the cold weather. You can moisturize your hair to the fullest, throw on a stylish fedora hat, and be out the door within ten minutes. It's so quick simple, and healthier.
Do you use Fedora's or any other types of hats as protective styling?
If so what types?
What other protective styling methods do you use for you hair in the winter?
